The members of the South Pole Challenge 2009 have a fantastic ambition - to walk to the South Pole; all the way from the coast of Antarctica.  It is a huge distance in extreme cold, reaching an altitude of over 10,000ft on the polar plateau. They will be following in the footsteps of polar legends.  Yet that is only the tip of the iceberg.  Before they step foot in Antarctica, they have to raise the money to get to there; no mean feat.  Furthermore, they must gain the experience and skills to operate safely in the polar world. Again a challenge in itself.

Yet I urge you to get behind this expedition for it has a unique and very real message; to demonstrate the ability, ambition and courage of today’s young people.  In 2004 I had the honour of leading a team of students to the South Pole; and saw at first hand the powerful and inspirational message they delivered to schools and colleges across the country.

This expedition will demonstrate in no uncertain terms what young people are capable of.  To have a dream, to step up and be counted and follow that dream.  Whatever the obstacles.  Whatever the challenge.

The Antarctic is a powerful place.  Yet the message of this expedition will be just as powerful; if not more so.  They will inspire countless young people to follow their dreams, whatever the challenge, just as these young people are doing; in walking to the South Pole.
